Every project is different! You may wish to do some of the work yourself or leave the bulk of it to me, including organising domain names and hosting. If you already have an old site you wish to use as a basis for a CMS then the process could be much simpler and quicker.
If you still just want a simple, static brochure style site despite the benefits of an open source CMS, perhaps because you don’t intend to update your site too often, we can create that too. We would discuss requirements before starting any project but the following gives some idea of the procedure involved.
- Initial requirements and gathering content. Initially, we can exchange e-mail and meet face-to-face to discuss and agree upon your requirements. I encourage your direct participation in preparing content for your website. You know your business or organisation best but I can advise you on what information to include and its structure if desired. A variety of good information will appeal to your visitors as well as to the search engines. In fact, content is key to a successful website, much more so than how ‘fancy’ it looks. And you will have the ability to add more information yourself later.
- Designing the theme and layout. Next, I will create a draft design for you to look at, integrating your content with any existing graphics from illustrations, photographs or your current publications. I will create your site in a private area on my server which you can access so you will have the opportunity to provide feedback.
- Installing and reacting to your feedback. I will setup your content management system and any required modules. This will be a straight-forward step if you only want a small website or it can take several weeks if you want a very specific customisation. It will be developed in real-time so that you may participate with feedback.
- Going Live and learning to use your CMS. After testing the site will be put live. How does it look? Are you happy with the finished product? You will need to learn how to use the administration area of your website to make edits and updates. I can direct you to towards the appropriate resources or give you instruction if desired.
- Promotion. Your website may be finished but there is still some important work to do. I can work with you to submit your web site to the important search engines and directories. I’ve kept search engine success in mind while developing your website. How? By concentrating on organising good quality straight-forward information in a manner search engines understand best. Don’t forget about advertising your web site in traditional media though, like business cards and stationery!
